The McCallister house

The McCallister house was the home of the McCallister family, located at 671 Lincoln Boulevard, Winnetka, Illinois.[1]

Locations in the house[]

Behind the scenes[]

The McCallister house serves as the main setting of Home Alone and is also seen in the beginning of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. It is also the sole setting of Home Alone Again with the Google Assistant.

The home is located at 671 Lincoln Ave in Winnetka, Illinois and was used primarily for exterior shots. Because the production found it too small for equipment, only a few interior scenes were filmed there. The kitchen, along with the main staircase, basement, attic and most of the first floor landing were filmed on location in the real house, thus making them the home's only interiors to be featured in the film. Most of the house's interiors were recreated or duplicated on a soundstage built in the gymnasium of former campus of New Trier Township High School. An example of this is the enlarged version of the staircase and main foyer of the real house. The tree house in the backyard was specifically built for the first film and dismantled after filming ended.

The house in Home Alone 4

For an exterior shot, Home Alone 4 uses a different house than the first two films. Although the film was shot predominantly in South Africa, this house appears to be the Evanston, Illinois house used for the Russell home in the film Uncle Buck, which was written and directed by John Hughes and starred John Candy and Macaulay Culkin. It is far smaller compared to the one from the first two movies, and is also missing the front drive. It is unknown whether the interiors – which bear no resemblance to the original house – were shot at this home, a different residence, or on a set.

Trivia[]

  • Home Alone Again with the Google Assistant implies that Kevin inherited the house.
  • The house became the focal point of the 2021 LEGO set based upon the first two Home Alone films.
  • In 35mm open matte film scan prints of Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, the exterior and interior shots of The McCallister house appear to be much farther away.
